Catholic Social Teachings Festival

On April 25-26, 2019, sixteen of our sisters from DMC participated in the first ever Festival of Catholic Social Teachings in the Philippines with Sr. Maredith Canoy as one of the presentors. This event was held at Maryhill School of Theology. The festival was a two-full day event that featured the advocacies of different groups and congregations that, inspired by the catholic encyclicals, seek to respond to the pressing situations of our brothers and sisters who are in need of care and attention, as well as the call to care for our common home.

For the first day, after the preliminary talk about the significance and relevance of this festival, eight presentors were given 20 minutes to introduce the history, nature, and purpose of their advocacies. Sr. Maredith presented and exhibited ecobrick-making which is also our advocacy to help lessen the plastic wastes dump into landfills. The throw pillows made out of discarded pieces of clothes from our workshop in Antipolo were exhibited and were immediately sold. Those who were not able to buy them from the exhibit put their orders which Sr. Maredith delivered after the event. The first day was capped with a cultural night and dinner. The second day was dedicated to the discussion of the Socio-political issues in the Philippines which featured both the lay and religious organizations who are directly assisting the children, wives, and relatives of the victims of extra judicial killings. Sr. M. Nimfa Ebora was moderator on the first part of the two days’ presentations. The last day of the festival was concluded with small group workshops and a Eucharistic celebration presided by the Most Rev. Deogracias Iniguez, D.D.
